So, here’s an example of why I started this website. I have come across this meme multiple times and it still defies logic the way outer space defies gravity.
First of all, in typical fashion, George Washington never actually said this. This is precisely what I mean about believing everything you read on the internet. It gives people justifications for things they believe in that are not legitimate. You want your guns? Cool. No one is trying to take them. But George Washington never said that. Period.
In reality, the founding fathers realized that a) we were a brand new nation who could stand to learn a few things and b) the constitution was intended to be a fluid document as a result. George Washington himself acknowledged that the constitution was flawed, but had faith in the amendment process to change those errors along with the times.
Thomas Jefferson said, “…laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as civilized society to remain ever under the regime of their barbarous ancestors.” (Letter to Samuel Kercheval, July 12, 1816)
In case you didn’t feel like reading that entire quote, I’ll spill the tea for you. What Jefferson was trying to say was that we cannot expect things to be the same in this country once it hits puberty and grows out of its infancy. Meaning, we will not (hopefully) always be living during a revolution or a civil war. Meaning that once we have proven ourselves to be massively untrustworthy with legal weapons, such as many of those used in school shootings, we need to not take away the right to own completely, but to simply add checks and balances. Background checks. Gun registration. That’s all.
So, to all the conservatives leaning heavily on the words of our founding fathers, I want you to do two things: First, fact check yourself. For the love of God. Second, consider why someone would want to completely fabricate a quote by a founding father. Here’s the answer: It’s to manipulate you. It’s not your fault, it can be quite compelling. But it is totally your fault that you can’t take a minute to fact check something.
Here is another, more time relevant (yet also inaccurate) call to arms so to speak about gun control:

Snazzy background aside, Cuomo has already signed this into law and as far as I know, no government caravans have arrived to take guns from innocent gun owners. This popped up right before midterms to rile up New Yorkers. The over 370,000 gun owners in New York State had to register their weapons in January 2018. Yes, the January that already happened.
Not to mention the fact that there is literally no reason to not want this law. The entire purpose is to ensure that individuals with a criminal history or a history of domestic violence do not illegal own firearms. It would also allow the government to better track gun crimes. Sounds pretty legit, right? Why wouldn’t you want that? More fear-mongering, that’s why.
But no, it’s “un-American” to have to register your weapon. How utterly sad and ridiculous. If you have nothing to hide, why not skip your way to the registration line?
